Male Athlete of the Week:
Aaron Hernandez – Men’s Track
Fourth-year jumper Aaron Hernandez continued his remarkable season, claiming the top spot in the triple jump for the third meet in a row. After three consecutive Canada West titles and three CIS medals in the triple jump, Hernandez had to switch take-off legs this year due to lingering injuries and hasn’t missed a beat.
Hernandez won the triple jump at the Golden Bear Challenge this past weekend with a jump of 14.57 metres and is ranked first in the Canada West rankings in the event. He has jumped just below 15 metres this year and is not far off his personal best of 15.50 metres, achieved using his natural take off leg.
Hernandez and the rest of his Pronghorn teammates are off this weekend but will travel to Regina next weekend to compete in the Canada West Championships.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Zoe Dahl – Women’s Basketball
Despite falling one win short of the playoffs, Zoe Dahl finished the 2016-17 season with a solid pair of games in Edmonton in two losses to the Alberta Pandas.
Saturday afternoon, Dahl had a game high 15 points on 5 of 12 shooting to go along with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Sunday night in the season finale, Dahl poured in another 14 points on 6 of 12 shooting while collecting seven rebounds and five assists.
The Calgary, AB product finished her fourth season with the Pronghorns averaging a team high 12.8 points 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
