Lethbridge, AB – The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 8, 2017.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Mitch Maxwell – Men’s Hockey
Fifth-year captain Mitch Maxwell kicked-off his final season as a Pronghorns in style last weekend, scoring a goal in each game to lead the Pronghorn men’s hockey team to a season opening split with the Calgary Dinos.
Friday night in Calgary, Maxwell scored the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Dinos. He also record three shots on goal in the season opening loss.
The next night, the Magrath, Alberta product played hero, scoring the game winning goal in overtime to give the Pronghorns a hard fought 2-1 win.
After the opening weekend, Maxwell is tied for second in Canada West goal scoring with six other players and is tied for the team lead in points with Justin Valentino and Dallas Valentine, with two.
The Pronghorns head out on the road this weekend, traveling to Saskatoon to face the U SPORTS third ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Mackenzie Gal – Women’s Hockey
Third-year forward Mackenzie Gal scored the lone goal in the Pronghorn women’s hockey home opener to propel her team to a season opening 1-0 win in double overtime.
During the win, Gal recorded two shots on goal and was a plus one.
In the back half of the home-and-home series, the Dinos returned the favor, earning the weekend split with a 1-0 win over the Pronghorns. Gal recorded one shot on goal in the loss.
Gal and Katelyn Breitkruez are tied for the team lead in points with one a piece.
Up next for the Pronghorns women’s hockey team is a home series with the Saskatchewan Huskies, this coming Friday and Saturday night.
