Female Athlete of the Week:
Sandra Latrace – Women’s Track
After missing all of the indoor varsity season last year due to injury, Sandra Latrace had a successful return to the university track scene this past weekend, taking home top spot in the long jump at the Golden Bears Open in Edmonton.
The Brooks, Alberta product would have won the event with any of her four clean jumps but finished the long jump with a furthest leap of 5.91 metres.
Two years ago, Latrace burst on to the university track landscape taking home both the Canada West and CIS long jump gold medals as a freshman.
In preparations for the Canada West Championships in late February, Latrace will next compete at the Bison Classic in Winnipeg, February 2nd and 3rd.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Aaron Hernandez – Men’s Track
Fifth-year jumper Aaron Hernandez kicked off his final season as a Pronghorn in style this past weekend with an exceptional performance. Finally healthy after dealing with nagging injuries the past two season, Hernandez opened the season with his second farthest jump ever of 15.46 metres.
The three-time national university triple jump champion had the two furthest jumps of the meet and now sits at the top of the Canada West and U SPORTS rankings.
Hernandez will next compete at the Bison Classic the first weekend of February, building towards the Canada West Championships, hosted by the University of Manitoba February 23rd and 24th.
