Female Athlete of the Week:
Asnate Fomina – Women’s Basketball
Wrapping up the home portion of the Canada West conference schedule, fourth-year guard Asnate Fomina had arguably her best weekend in a Pronghorn jersey this season, combining to score 38 points, while adding 10 rebounds, eight assists and two steals in the Pronghorns impressive sweep of the Trinity Western Spartans.
The NCAA transfer and Latvian international scored 11 points while adding seven assists and two steals in Friday night’s close 80-73 win.
Saturday night in the series sweeping 88-54 win, Fomina had her most productive game point wise during her first season with the Pronghorns, pouring in a game high 27 points on an efficient 11 of 16 shooting performance which including only missing one of six three point attempts. She also added eight rebounds, two steals and an assist.
This season, Fomina is averaging 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4 assists per game.
With the two wins the Pronghorns clinched a playoff spot and moved up to fifth in the Canada West RPI and will look to clinch a first home playoff date since 1990.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Zac Overwater – Men’s Basketball
Playing in his final regular season home games as a Pronghorn, fifth-year guard Zac Overwater propelled the Pronghorn men’s basketball team to a weekend sweep of the Trinity Western Spartans, combining for 36 points, 17 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and a steal in the two wins.
In the series opener, the Didsbury, Alberta product recorded 14 points to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the Pronghorns convincing 115-87 victory.
During senior night, Overwater scored a team high 22 points to lead the Pronghorns to a fourth win in a row, 109-86 over the Spartans.
This season, Overwater leads the Pronghorns in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game, which is good for eighth on the Canada West scoring list. He is also 13 points away from becoming the third all-time leading scoring in Pronghorn history.
Overwater and his Pronghorn teammates will wrap up the Canada West regular season schedule this weekend in Prince George and look to solidify a home playoff date the following week.
