Male Athlete of the Week:
Derek Brown – Men’s Hockey
 
 
Wrapping up the Canada West regular season, first-year forward Derek Brown led the way as the Pronghorn men’s hockey team closed out with a weekend split with southern Alberta foe, the Mount Royal Cougars.
 
Following a loss Friday night in Calgary in the front half of the home-and-home series, Brown scored once and added three assists to lead the Pronghorns to a 6-2 win.
 
Joining the team for the second semester, the former Vernon Viper registered two goals and four assists in 12 games.
 
The Pronghorn men’s hockey team will make a return to the Canada West playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season, traveling to Calgary this weekend to face the Calgary Dinos in a best of three Canada West quarterfinal series. The series starts Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena. Catch all the action on Canada West TV.
 

Female Athlete of the Week:
 
Amy Mazutinec – Women’s Basketball
 
In the first home playoff game for the Pronghorn women’s basketball team in 25 years, second-year wing Amy Mazutinec was a key contributor in the Pronghorns winning their first playoff game since 2002.
 
Friday night in the Canada West play-in game versus the Manitoba Bisons, the Stirling, Alberta product came off the bench to tie for the team lead in points with 17 points on 22 minutes of action. She was a proficient six-of-nine from the floor, including draining both of her three point attempts. She also collected five rebounds and a block in the win.
 
During the regular season, Mazutinec averaged 9.7 points per game, starting 13 of 20 games for the Pronghorns. She also averaged 4.8 rebounds during the Pronghorns 12-8 regular season.
 
The Pronghorns women’s basketball team heads to Edmonton this weekend to face the Alberta Pandas in one of four Canada West quarterfinals. The best of three series kicks off Thursday night in Edmonton. Catch all the action on Canada West TV.
