Lethbridge, AB – The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 24, 2019

Female Athlete of the Week:

Sandra Latrace – Women’s Track

At the 2019 Canada West Track and Field Championship this past weekend, third-year jumper and sprinter Sandra Latrace stole the show for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, earning three medals, two gold and one silver.

A new media student, Latrace earned her third career long jump gold medal to open the meet, as a season best jump of 6.13 metres separated her from the rest of the field. In the three years she has competed at the Canada West Championships, she remains undefeated in the long jump. She missed the 2017 season due to injury but is the 2016, 2018, 2019 Canada West gold medalist in the event.

Latrace followed that performance up with another gold medal in the 60 metre dash, winning a very close race with a personal best time of 7.49 seconds, only 0.01 ahead of the silver medalist.

She rounded out the Canada West meet with a silver medal in the triple jump, competing in the event for the first time this season and registering a furthest leap of 11.87 metres.

On the strength of her performance in the 60 metre dash, Latrace was named women's outstanding performance of the meet.

Latrace will look to defend her U SPORTS long jump gold medal and add to her career medal total in two weeks’ time in Winnipeg

Male Athlete of the Week:
Owen Guyn – Men’s Swim

Competing in his final meet as a Pronghorn Athlete, fifth-year swimmer Owen Guyn swam in three finals and was honored at the end of the meet, being named the male recipient of the U SPORTS Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Guyn was recognized for his outstanding contributions in the classroom, pool and community.

The fifth-year swimmer has been true student-athlete, entering his final year as a four-time Academic All-Canadian and being named to the dean's list.

An active member in the community, Owen has volunteered over 500 hours this past year and his community service is highlighted by a learn to swim program for refugee children through Lethbridge Family Services that he helped start and coach.

In the pool in Vancouver at the U SPORTS Championships this past weekend, Guyn opened the meet with a sixth place finish in the 50 metre freestyle and followed that performance up with a 11th place finish in the 50 metre butterfly and a 16th place in the 100 metre free.
