Female Athlete of the Week:
Shelby Ballendine – Women’s hockey
With time winding down in her final home game in a Pronghorn jersey, fifth-year senior Shelby Ballendine set up the tying goal to force overtime with only 7 seconds remaining. When overtime solved nothing, Ballendine scored the deciding goal in the shootout to give the ‘Horns the win. The win arguably saved the ‘Horns playoff hopes. On a bye this week, the women’s hockey team leads the Manitoba Bisons by three points for the final spot with the Bisons playing the conference leading Calgary Dinos in the conference in the final weekend of the season.
In addition to her heroics, her assist Saturday night was also historic as Ballendine moved into a tie atop the ‘Horns all-time scoring list with 73 points. In 118 career conference games, also tops in ‘Horns history, Ballendine has recorded 38 goals and 35 assists.
This season, Ballendine is seventh in Canada West scoring with 9 goals and 12 assists.
