Female Athlete of the Week:
Sandra Latrace – Women’s Track
Wrapping up preparations for the Canada West Championships, fourth-year multiple U SPORTS medalist Sandra Latrace is poised to defend both her Canada West long jump and 60 metre titles in two weeks’ time.
This past weekend at the Panda Open in Edmonton Latrace took top spot in both events. In the long jump Latrace had the two furthest jumps in the competition and won the event with a jump of 6.17, 43 centimetres further than anyone else in the event. She is currently ranked first in U SPORTS in the long jump.
In the 60 metres, Latrace won all three of her races and took the finals with a time of 7.50 seconds and moved into fourth place in the U SPORTS rankings.
Male Athlete of the Week
Clayton Wong – Men’s Track
Third-year jumper Clayton Wong, who made his first U SPORTS Championship appearance a year ago, had a strong sequence of jumps in his final tune up before the Canada West Championships.
Opening with a leap of 13.24, Wong steadily increased through his next four jumps, peaking with a jump of 13.98 metres to take the top spot.
Heading into the conference meet in two weeks, Wong is ranked fourth among Canada West jumpers in the triple jump and was bumped to eighth on the U SPORTS rankings.
The Canada West Championships will be hosted the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon February 21st and 22nd.
