Lethbridge, AB – The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 24, 2021.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Apollo Hess – Men’s Swim
While it was a year in the making, first-year swimmer Apollo Hess made a splash in the pool to open the 2021-22 season this past weekend, breaking a pair of school records during the LASC Fall Challenge.
After spending a year with the Pronghorns during a lost year with starting and stopping of training, Hess opened the meet breaking a 19 year old record in the 200 metre IM, a record previously held by Gerard Hunter.
Later in the meet, Hess broke the 100 metre IM record that was held by Ryan Thornley, set in 2013. He also tied another Pronghorn record held by Joel Robinson that was set in 2017.
Currently, Hess is ranked first in Canada in the 50 metre Breast stroke.
Hess and the Pronghorn swim team will head to Calgary this coming weekend for the Dinos Cup. The Canada West Championships will be host by the University of Alberta, November 26th to 28th.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Erin Gill – Women’s Soccer
Playing in her final games as a Pronghorn, graduating goalkeeper Erin Gill backstopped the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s soccer team to a great final weekend of the season, earning four points in two games versus the Mount Royal Cougars.
In Saturday’s 2-2 tie with the Cougars, Gill made seven saves to preserve the single point and then followed up that with a six save performance to secure a 2-1 win in the season finale.
Wrapping up her University career, Gill finished the season with 53 saves in seven games, which placed her 8th among all goalies in Canada West.
