Male Athlete of the Week:
Chad Oviatt – Men’s Basketball
Needing a sweep in the final series to secure a first round bye in the Canada West men’s basketball playoff tournament, forward Chad Oviatt stepped up with two consecutive double-doubles to secure the sweep of the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton.
Making up a previously postponed series and playing a rare Thursday night game, Oviatt scored a game high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Pronghorns 84-70 win over the Griffins.
Friday afternoon in the regular season finale, Oviatt poured in another 18 points on an efficient 8 of 12 from the field in the 95-73 win. He also set a new career high with 17 rebounds in the win.
On the season, Oviatt finished second in Canada West rebounding, averaging 10 rebounds per game to go along with 11.6 points per game.
Oviatt and his Pronghorn teammates will be on home court Friday night at 8:00 pm in round two of the Canada West playoff tournament, their opponent will be the winner of the Manitoba Bisons – UBCO Heat game Thursday night.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Caitlyn Bailes – Women’s Track and Field
Competing in the final tune up meet before the Canada West Championships and at the host venue for the Championships, Third-year thrower Caitlyn Bailes took home top spot in the weight throw at the Bison Classic with a best throw of 16.39 metres.
Her best throw from last weekend is a hair under her season best throw of 16.43 metres that she threw at the Panda Open two weeks ago and has her currently ranked third in Canada West heading into the Championship. She also sits sixth in U SPORTS rankings.
Bailes and her Pronghorn teammates will keep preparing for the Canada West Championships, hosting by the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, March 18th to 20th.
