Male Athlete of the Week:
Deng Dak – Men’s Basketball
Making his Canada West playoff debut, first-year guard Deng Dak rose to the occasion as the seventh seeded Lethbridge Pronghorn men’s basketball team hit the floor twice at the 1st Choice Savings centre.
Following an opening round bye, the Brooks, Alberta product scored a game high 24 points to lead the Pronghorns to a second round win, 91-81 over the UBC Okanagan Heat. Dak was a stellar 7 of 11 from the floor, including hitting five shots from long range. He also added four rebounds in the win.
Facing the second seeded Victoria Vikes, Dak scored nine points and added three rebounds and two steals, however the Pronghorns season ended with a 79-55 loss in the Canada West quarter finals.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Jessica Haenni – Women’s Basketball
Competing in the first ever Canada West wide playoff tournament, starting guard Jessica Haenni helped propel the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team to the Canada West Final Four with two wins last weekend in Calgary.
Following an opening round bye, Haenni’s 26 points led the Pronghorns to a second round win, 80-77 over the Manitoba Bisons. Her 26 points came off an efficient 10 for 18 shooting performance to go along with two rebounds and two assists.
In the quarter-final match up with fourth seeded Trinity Western Spartans, Haenni scored another 14 points and added three assists, two rebounds and a block in the Pronghorns come from behind 76-67 win.
Seeded fifth in the Canada West tournament, the Pronghorns will now face the top seeded Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on March 18th.
