Female Athlete of the Week:
Hailey Slobodian – Women’s Soccer
Closing out the 2022 Canada West women’s soccer season, second-year striker tied a Canada West record for goals scored in a half in the Pronghorns 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen.
Following a hard fought 1-0 loss to the Manitoba Bisons the previous day, Slobodian scored four first half goals to pace the Pronghorns to their first win of the season in the season finale.
With the four first half goals, East Paul, Manitoba product became the first player in Canada West women’s soccer history since 2016 to score four goals in one half.
Slobodian finished the season with a team leading eight goals, which also tied her for sixth in Canada West goals scoring. She also recorded three assists this season to finish with 11 points.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Kai Sakaguchi – Men’s Soccer
Facing a pair of southern Alberta rivals, second-year striker Kai Sakaguchi scored three goals over two games to lead the Pronghorns to a 1-0-1 weekend record.
Friday night, the Evensburg, Alberta product scored his third goal of the season to help the Pronghorns pick up a 4-2 over the Calgary Dinos and sweep the season series with the Dinos. He also had a game high shot attempts.
Facing the U SPORTS fourth ranked and Prairie Division leading Mount Royal Cougars, Sakaguchi lead the way, scoring both goals as the Pronghorns battled one of the top teams in the country to a 2-2 draw.
For his efforts, Sakaguchi was also named the Canada West Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.
With his three goals last weekend, Sakaguchi took over the team lead in goals this season with five.
The Pronghorns will host the Saskatchewan Huskies this Saturday in the final game of the 2022 Canada West season.
