Male Athlete of the Week:
Derek Waldner – Men’s Basketball
Fifth-Year Post Derek Waldner registered consecutive double-doubles this past weekend to lead the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a pair of wins over the UNBC Timberwolves and Mount Royal Cougars. In the two wins, Waldner combined to score 41 points and grab 30 rebounds, while hitting on nearly 60% of his shots from the field (16 for 27).
Friday night, in the Pronghorns’ 99-90 win over the Timberwolves, Waldner led all scorers with 26 points on 10 of 17 shooting and snatched 17 rebounds, which was one short of tying his career high.
In the weekend finale, Waldner had another efficient night from the floor, hitting 6 of 10 from the field for 15 points and grabbing another 13 rebounds in the ‘Horns 93-73 win over the Cougars.
Through eight games, Waldner leads the conference in rebounding, averaging 9.1 per night and his 16.9 points per game is good enough for 13th place on the conference scoring list.
Waldner was also named the Canada West Male Athlete of the Week.
