LETHBRIDGE – Coming off a pair of close games against the Winnipeg Wesmen last weekend that left the Horns with a 1-1 conference record, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team cruised to decisive victory over the UBC-Okanagan Heat 88-61 in their 2011-2012 home opener. The Horns came out of the gates firing, pushing the score to 11-0 after four minutes of play and leaving the Heat in a deficit from which they would never recover.
The depth of the Horns bench and distribution in scoring was key to the home team’s victory, as four players reached double figures including a 19-point effort by
Dominyc Coward, only recently returning to the hardwood after early-season surgery. Point guard
Daryl Cooper added 14 points while notching 10 assists and 7 rebounds. Fourth-year post
Derek Waldner pitched in another 14 points while pulling down 10 boards. Lethbridge College transfer
Logan Reiter streaked to 14 points.
For the Heat, third-year guard Yassine Ghomari logged 22 points on the scoresheet, while Mack Roth added 10.
Cooper attributed his team’s success to their efforts to push the ball and the tempo of the game. “We were on the same page tonight,” the San Francisco native relayed. “We got the ball up the floor and hit the open shots and our big guys were a real strength for us.”
The Horns will meet the Thompson Rivers University tomorrow night at 8:00. The WolfPack may prove to be a stronger foe than the Heat, coming off a 96-79 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos tonight. UBCO will move north to meet the Dinos tomorrow night in Calgary. The games will be broadcast on canadawest.tv.
