LETHBRIDGE – After dropping a pair of tough decisions last weekend against the Winnipeg Wesmen, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team gave the home crowd a solid performance, downing the untested UBCO Heat 81-68. In their inaugural CIS performance, the Heat clawed within one of the Horns in the third stanza, but trailed the home team the entire game due to the Horns sharp shooting and aggressive team defense.
Katlyn Olsen, a transfer product of the Red Deer Queens, led the Horns in scoring in her 1
st Choice Savings Centre debut with 20 points. The Raymond product shot 6-9 from 3-point range, and was joined by high school teammate
Ali Cameron, who was 3-5 from beyond the arc and added 13 points. With five players in double figures, the Horns relied on distributed scoring and team play for the win, bolstered by Idaho-native
Deanna Dotts’s 11 rebounds and fifth year guard
Lauren Taal’s four steals.
The Heat were led by fourth year post Roslyn Huber, with 18 points and six boards, who contributed to an 11-0 run that the Heat posted in the third quarter. Fellow post Krystal Schouten added 15 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Olsen noted her team’s fortitude in responding to the surge by the Heat by increasing the Horns’ lead to nine by the end of the quarter. “We shot the ball well and played together tonight,” Olsen reported. “Instead of playing as 12 individuals, we played as a unit. We communicated on defense and hustled for loose balls. It felt really good out there.”
The Horns will meet Thompson Rivers University tomorrow night as the 1
st Choice Savings Centre at 6:00 while UBCO moves on to play the U of C Dinos in Calgary. The game will be webcast on canadawest.tv.
