Horns Swept by Huskies

Saskatoon - Scoring 49 points in the second half, the No. 6 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies swept the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns with an 81-59 victory Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win, the Huskies move to 2-3 on the season, while the Pronghorns move to 2-4. A night earlier, the Huskies won 62-55.

Saskatchewan jumped out to the lead in the first half outscoring the Pronghorns 17-6 in the opening frame. A jump shot by rookie guard Kelsey Trulsrud with six minutes left in the first quarter started the Huskies 11-2 scoring run. The Huskies continued to find the basket in the second quarter and led 32-26 at half.

The Pronghorns had an extra jump coming out of halftime pulling the game to within three at 36-33, before Mary Hipperson scored for the Huskies. Lethbridge got it as close as two points before two three point plays by Amy Lackie and Riley Humbert pulled the Huskies back to an eight point lead. From there the Huskies continued to dominate leading 55-42 at the end of the third and outscoring the ‘Horns 26-17 the fourth.

Veteran fifth-year guard Katie Miyazaki led the Huskies’ charge scoring a game-high 22 points, five rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Fellow fifth-year guard Lackie and rookie post Daylce Emmerson added 10 points each.

Three Pronghorns were in double digits on the night with Lauren Taal leading the way with 16 points, followed by Kim Veldman with 14 and Natalie Nichols with 11. Veldman also added a game-high 10 rebounds.

Saskatchewan finished the game shooting 45%, while Lethbridge shot at 37%.

The Huskies remain at home to host the University of Fraser Valley Cascades and the Trinity Western University Spartans next weekend, while Lethbridge returns home to host the UBC Thunderbirds and University of Victoria Vikes.
