The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team (1-1 CW, 1-5 overall) will make their 2011-2012 home debut this weekend, welcoming the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack to the 1
st Choice Savings Centre.
The Horns split their opening weekend series with the Winnipeg Wesman, dropping Friday’s season opener 74-71 before rebounding the next night and edging out a 69-68 victory.
Third-year point guard Daryl Cooper impressed in his first weekend of action with the Horns. Cooper, who hails from San Francisco, CA , finished the weekend series against the Winnipeg Wesmen as the Horns leader in points (13.5ppg) and assists (4apg).
Another newcomer and former Lethbridge College standout, Dominyc Coward also debuted strong for the Horns averaging 13 points and 8 boards over the weekend. Coward, who also spent time with the Calgary Dinos, impressed despite missing most of the preseason with an injury.
On Friday night the Horns will take on the UBCO Heat (0-0 CW) in their first ever game in the CIS. The Heat, based out of Kelowna, BC, previously played in the BCCAA before moving to the Canada West conference this season.
Saturday night sees the Horns match-up against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (1-1 CW). The WolfPack will take on the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday before heading south to battle the Horns.
The WolfPack enter the weekend at 1-1 after splitting their opening series with the UFV Cascades. Like the Pronghorns, the WolfPack dropped the Friday night opener before bouncing back to take the second game. Saturday`s victory over the Cascades was the first win the WolfPack has had against a CIS ranked opponent since they entered the Canada West conference six years ago.
The WolfPack are led by Justin King who enters the weekend as the Canada West scoring leader, averaging 26 points a game. King, a native of Las Vegas, NV, is also a beast on the boards and sits 2nd in the conference with 13 boards per game.
