The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women`s basketball team (0-2 CW, 5-6 overall) are looking to get back on track after being swept in their season opening series against the University of Winnipeg Wesman. The Horns will make their 2011-2012 home debut by welcoming a pair of West Division foes to the 1
st Choice Savings Centre, with the UBCO Heat on Friday night and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Saturday.
The Horns opened the 2011-2012 with two disappointing losses in Winnipeg. The Horns dropped a 63-57 decision on Friday night and were downed 61-51 on Saturday. There was some good news for the Horns as fifth-year guard Lauren Taal successfully made her way back into the line-up after being out since January with a knee injury. Taal finished the weekend with 12 and 13 points respectively. Natalie Nichols impressed in her Horns debut, averaging 8 points per game as well as leading the team in assists and rebounds. Second year forward Kim Veldman also had a strong weekend, averaging 10.5 points per game.
On Friday night the Horns will welcome the UBCO Heat (0-0) to Lethbridge and the Canada West conference. The Heat, based out of Kelowna, BC, previously played in the BCCAA before moving to the Canada West conference this season.
Saturday night the Horns take on the TRU WolfPack (2-0 CW). The WolfPack come off a pair of impressive victories against the previously CIS #9 ranked UFV Cascades. The WolfPack will come to the 1
st Choice Savings Centre after opening up their Alberta road trip with a game on Friday against the Calgary Dinos.
The WolfPack are led by Diane Schuetze and Jen Ju who are both currently sitting in the top ten Canada West scorers. Schuetze comes into the weekend averaging a conference best 22.0 points per game, meanwhile Ju is 9
th best, scoring 15.0 points a contest.
