Lethbridge – Something has to give this weekend when the
Pronghorn women’s basketball team (2-12 CW, 8-18 overall) hosts the Manitoba Bisons (3-11 CW) as both teams have been marred in long slumps.
After starting the season 2-2, the ‘Horns have lost 10 straight games and sit 7
th in the Prairie Division, while the Bisons are only one game ahead of the ‘Horns in 6
th and have lost 8 games in a row themselves.
Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 6:00pm at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre, and the game will also be webcast on
www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.
Horns still searching for complete game
For much of the season the ‘Horns have played well for large portions of games only to allow a poor quarter or stretch lead to their down fall. In a conference that has produced 19 of the past 20 national champions, it is difficult to be successful without playing a full 40-minute game. Last Saturday night was a perfect example, trailing Calgary by only three points heading into the fourth quarter, the ‘Horns were outscored 19-7 in the final 10 minutes to drop their 10
th straight game.
Senior guard Lauren Taal and post Kim Veldman continue to lead the ‘Horns offensively with 11.7 and 10 points per game respectively, but ‘Horns newcomer Ali Cameron had a break-out series last weekend which can only bode well for the 10
th ranked offense in the conference. Last Friday Cameron only missed one shot enroute to 12 points and then led the team the next night with 20 points, setting a new CIS career high. The ‘Horns are averaging 59.9 points for but have scored above that average in two of past three games.
Defensively, the ‘Horns are ranked 12
th in the conference allowing just over 70 points against per night.
Bisons a mirror image
Sitting at 3-3 just prior to the semester break, the Bisons have lost 8 straight games, dropping to 6
th in the conference. The Bisons had faced CIS ranked opponents for four consecutive games prior to this weekend.
Offensively the Bisons are ranked 13
th averaging only 52.8 points per game, and only have one player averaging double digits on the season. Mubo Ilelaboye is 19
th on the conference’s scoring list, averaging 11.9 points.
At the other end of the floor, the Bisons are ranked one spot ahead of the ‘Horns at 11
th, allowing 68.6 points against a night.
