Horns Open Second Half versus a Pair BC Schools

1/4/2012 4:12:00 PM

Lethbridge - Lethbridge - The women’s basketball team (2-6 CW, 8-12 overall) heading out on the road to kick off the second semester of the conference schedule, traveling west to face the Trinity Western Spartans (3-5 CW) and the Fraser Valley Cascades (5-3 CW).

Friday night, the ‘Horns visit the Spartans in Langley before facing the Cascades the next night to complete their west coast swing.

Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 6:00pm and 5:00pm PST respectively and the game will also be webcast on www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.

Horns Looking to Rebound
The ‘Horns entered the semester break riding a four game losing streak but will look to build on their 1-2 record during a holiday season tournament in Las Vegas versus American competition. The ‘Horns lone win came against the University Great Falls, which was sandwiched between losses to Carroll College and Lewis-Clark State.

If the ‘Horns are to right the ship in the second half, they will need to ramp up the offense to be successful. During conference action the ‘Horns have only eclipsed the 60 points twice, both victories, and are ranked 10th in the conference averaging only 60.1 points per game. Kim Veldman and Lauren Taal are the only two ‘Horns averaging double digits in points per game with 10.9 and 10.4 respectively.

The ‘Horns are also ranked 11th defensively, allowing 67.4 points against a night.

Spartans looking for consistency
While the Spartans went into the semester break having won only one of their previous five games, the lone win was a quality road win over a ranked team and should make any opponent wary of the Spartans potential. In their second to last game of the first semester the Spartans went into Edmonton and upset 7th ranked Alberta Pandas.

Offensively the Spartans are ranked ninth in the conference scoring 63.6 points a game and the bulk of the scoring comes from three players who average double digits in points. Tiffany Olsen leads the team with 12.1 points per game and both Laurelle Weigl and Holly Strom are averaging more than 11 points a game each.

Home court advantage for Cascades
Abbotsford is proving to be a difficult place for visiting basketball teams to earn victories. Similar to the Cascades men’s basketball team, the women’s team is undefeated at home this season and is currently tied for second in the West Division. The Cascades are 1-3 on the road this season.

The conference’s sixth ranked offense is led by Nicole Wierk’s 13.3 points per game, and two other players are averaging double digits in points. Tessa Klassen is averaging 11.9 points, while Sarah Wierks is nearly averaging a double-double with 10 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.
