'Horns Host Conference's Newest Schools for the First Time

11/21/2012 2:12:00 PM

Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team (3-3 CW) returns to the friendly confines of the 1st Choice Savings Centre looking to rebound after losing both games on the road last weekend and will host the two newest schools  to join Canada West this weekend.

Friday night the ‘Horns host the UNBC Timberwolves (3-3 CW) and will wrap up the home weekend Saturday welcoming the Mount Royal Cougars (2-4 CW). Both games tip-off at the 1st Choice Savings Centre at 6:00pm and are webcast on www.canadawest.tv, home for all Canada West webcasts.

It has been an up and down start to the conference schedule, after opening the season with three consecutive wins, the ‘Horns have lost their last three games. While the ‘Horns have struggled at times at the offensive end of the floor and rank 13th in the conference in scoring, averaging just over 55 points a game, they do rank second in the conference in three point percentage at 37.8%.

Despite the ‘Horns  two losses last weekend, they do still rank in the top half of the conference defensively, sitting tied for seventh with the undefeated Calgary Dinos, surrendering 65 points per game.

Ali Cameron, who has led the ‘Horns in scoring four of the team’s six games sits ninth in the conference in scoring averaging 16.5 points. Kim Veldman is the only other Pronghorn to average double digits in points thus far, averaging 11.7 ppg.

The UNBC Timberwolves have had a pretty smooth transition into the Canada West but have yet to face any of the heavy hitters in the conference. The Timberwolves were swept on the road by Thompson Rivers before sweeping the winless Trinity Western Spartans their inaugural Canada West home opener. Last weekend at home, the Timberwolves split their series with UBC-O.

Offensively, UNBC ranks eighth in the conference averaging 67 points per game and are led by Mercedes VanKoughnett who is averaging a double-double. VanKoughnett is tenth in conference scoring averaging 16.0 ppg and 11.3 rebounds a night.

Saturday night’s opponent, Mount Royal Cougars have not had as smooth transition into the University level, winning only one of their first six games. The Cougars are losers of their last three games, and their first Canada West win came two weeks ago versus the UBC-O Heat on the road.

The Cougars are ranked 14th in both offense and defense in the conference averaging 54.7 and 70.7 respectively and only have one player averaging double-digits in points with Hilary Annich averaging 11 points a night.

The ‘Horns will conclude the first semester of conference action next weekend, traveling to BC to face the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds.
