Box Score

LETHBRIDGE – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team struggled to score for the first two and a half minutes of the game, allowing the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves to find a 2-0 lead, but it would be the only time the Timberwolves would hold the advantage as the ‘Horns cruised from a 25-12 first quarter to a 74-58 win at the 1st Choice Savings Centre Friday night.

Third-year guard Ali Cameron, who sits 9th in Canada West in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game, dropped 22 against the Timberwolves to lead the ‘Horns.  Cameron was deadly from beyond the arc, locking down a perfect 5-5 until minutes into the fourth quarter and finishing 6-8 on the night.  Transfer pivot, Erin Skippon added 19 and pulled in seven boards, while Lethbridge product Kim Veldman chipped in 11 and locked down nine rebounds.  The Timberwolves’ Emily Kaehn, averaging 11.5 points per game in Canada West, led all scorers on the night with 22.  Her effort was supported by 16 points and nine boards from Mercedes Van Koughnett.

The sharp shooting of the ‘Horns in the first half gave them a comfortable cushion for the rest of the game, as they connected on 42 percent from the floor and 63 percent from beyond the arc, even surpassing the .38 3-point field goal percentage that lands them second in the conference standings.  They finished the second half with a respectable 41 percent from the floor and 47 percent from three point range, while the Timberwolves connected on 30 percent from the floor and 21 percent from long range to close out the game.

With the win, the ‘Horns pull their record above the .500 mark to 4-3 and the Timberwolves drop to 3-4.  The ‘Horns will try to extend their winning streak to two tomorrow against Mount Royal University’s Cougars at the 1st Choice Savings Centre at 6:00 with the men’s game to follow.  The Timberwolves, who fall to 3-4 on the season, will move on to face the University of Calgary Dinos at 5:00.  Games will be webcast on canadawest.tv.
