‘Horns Wrap Up 2012 with a Tough West Coast Trip

11/28/2012 3:13:00 PM

Lethbridge – For the second time this season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team (4-4 CW) heads out on the road to face tough competition, traveling to the west coast to face the CIS seventh ranked Victoria Vikes (6-2 CW) and UBC Thunderbirds.

Coming off a weekend split last weekend, the ‘Horns look to finish the first semester of action on a positive note but the task will not be easy.

A night after beating the UNBC Timberwolves last Friday, the ‘Horns, usually a solid shooting team, really struggled offensively the next night and were beaten by the Mount Royal Cougars.

Ali Cameron, who has led the Pronghorns in scoring in six of eight games this season, is tied for fifth in conference scoring. She averages 18.3 points per game. Forwards Kim Veldman and Erin Skippon are both averaging just over 11 points a game for the ‘Horns, while Katlyn Olsen is fourth in the conference in assists, averaging 4.8 a game.

The Vikes enter the final weekend of the first semester riding a four game winning streak, including an impressive road sweep last weekend of the Alberta Pandas and Saskatchewan Huskies. The Vikes only losses so far in conference action were also on the road and were to the undefeated and CIS second ranked Fraser Valley Cascades.

Statistically, the Vikes are ranked fifth in both offense and defense, scoring 70.4 points per game and allowing on average 61.9 points. Three Vikes account for the more than half of the offense with fifth-year senior guard Debbie Yeboah leading the way averaging 18.9 points per game.

Saturday night’s opponent, UBC Thunderbirds, opened the season with four straight wins and were ranked 10th in the nation for the opening four weeks of the CIS top ten pole, but since the hot start the T-Birds have gone 1-3 and dropped out of the top ten this week.

After losing to the Huskies last Friday in Saskatoon, the T-Birds beat Alberta last Saturday to put an end to a three game losing streak. Their other two losses were also to the Cascades.

The T-Birds seventh ranked offense is led by Kris Young and her 19.1 points per game. She sits second on the conference scoring list and is also fourth in the conference in rebounding, averaging 8.5 rebounds a night.

Friday night’s game versus the Vikes tips-off at 6:00pm PST, while Saturday’s game versus the T-Birds goes at 5:00pm PST. Both games will be broadcast on www.canadawest.tv, home for all Canada West webcasts.
