Horns Host Nationally Ranked Huskies

Lethbridge – Fresh off a weekend sweep over the Winnipeg Wesmen, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team will face a huge test this weekend, hosting the CIS sixth ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (1-1 CW).

Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday night are scheduled for 6:00pm at the 1st Choice Savings Centre and both contests will be broadcast on www.canadawest.tv , home for all Canada West webcasts.

The ‘Horns couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season last weekend and while the team relied heavily on their five starters, they did get solid contributions from their short bench last weekend. With only nine players dressed, all five starters played 30 plus minutes each game and accounted for the bulk of the scoring, but all four reserves chipped in with valuable minutes.

Ali Cameron led the ‘Horns each night in scoring, with 22 and 16 points respectively, and Katlyn Olsen was a force at both ends of the floor.

While the Huskies split last weekend, they did so versus the previously national second ranked Regina Cougars. Thursday night, the Huskies upset the Cougars in Regina 70-65 in overtime before losing in Saskatoon 79-65 Saturday night.

Like the ‘Horns, the Huskies have a new look behind the bench in interim head coach Jill Humbert, who takes the reigns this season, while Lisa Thomaidis is on a professional leave of absence for the 2012-13 season.

Returning to the Huskies starting lineup will be Canada West Rookie of the Year Dalyce Emmerson, as well as guards Kabree Howard and Kiera Lyons. Emmerson made a big impact in 2011-12 as one of two players in the CIS to average a double-double with 13.4 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Howard quarterbacks’ the offence averaging nine points per game and tallying 54 assists last season.
