Box Score Lethbridge - It hasn’t happened since February 2009, but the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team met the sixth ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies and came out with a win. Riding the momentum of a sweep last weekend, the ‘Horns prevailed 67 – 61 at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre Friday night.
The ‘Horns were led by fifth-year Queens transfer Erin Skippon with 20 points and eight rebounds, shooting guard Ali Cameron with 14 points, and third-year post Kim Veldman with 13. Last season’s Canada West Rookie of the Year, Dalyce Emmerson hauled in 11 boards and both she and guard, Kiera Lyons chipped in 15 points for the Huskies.
The ‘Horns are blessed or cursed with a relatively short roster as it is, and though they relied on contributions from their bench, Coach Erin McAleenan didn’t reach very far past her starting line-up to contribute minutes. Though, at times, the ‘Horns looked fatigued, they continually found a way to score. With four minutes left in the third quarter, the Huskies had gained some momentum and cut the ‘Horns’ lead to three when Skippon scored and then immediately took a charge to curb the Huskies’ enthusiasm. Veldman grabbed an offensive rebound on the following possession and layed it back in to push the lead back to seven. Point guard Katelyn Olsen hit from beyond the arc at the three quarter time buzzer to end off the quarter 52-44 and her efforts were mirrored by Stephanie Inman who knocked down a trey of her own as the ‘Horns’ first points of the fourth to push the lead to 12 and give her team control for the remainder of the game.
The ‘Horns meet the Huskies tomorrow night and will look to beat the Huskies for the second time since ’09. Tip off will be at 6:00 pm at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre with the men’s game to follow. Games will be webcast on canadawest.tv.
