Lethbridge –Coming off their best offensive weekend of the season, the
Pronghorn women’s basketball team (4-12 CW) heads out on the road for the final time this season, traveling to Brandon to face the Brandon Bobcats (0-16 CW). While the ‘Horns have been eliminated from post-season contention, with all but one player eligible to return next season, the focus is to build off a solid finish to the season for next year.
Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 6:00pm CST at the Brandon University Gymnasium, it will also mark the final basketball games to be played in the gym, as Brandon University will open Healthy Living Centre in the fall of 2012; the games will also be webcast on
www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.
Horns building off offensive outburst
The ‘Horns put an end to their long losing streak in style last weekend, sweeping the Manitoba Bisons and scoring well above their season average. Saturday night’s 94 points was their best offensive production of the season and was achieved by a balanced attack with five players hitting double digits in points.
Senior guard Lauren Taal continues to lead the team offensively with 11.9 points and saw her name etched in the Canada West record books last weekend, setting a new single game high in steals with 13. The play of first-year Pronghorns of late has been really encouraging for the program. Coming off her best weekend of the season two weeks ago, Ali Cameron continued with her strong play last weekend scoring in double digits both nights. American Junior college transfer Deanna Dotts had arguably her best weekend in a ‘Horns jersey, scoring 12 and 13 points respectively last weekend.
After last weekend’s games, the ‘Horns moved up to 11
th defensively in the conference, allowing 70.8 points per game. The ‘Horns will conclude the 2011-12 Canada West season next weekend, hosting the nation’s top ranked team in the undefeated Regina Cougars next weekend.
Declawed Bobcats
The Bobcats are winless on the season and have lost 41 consecutive conference games dating back to the 2009-10 season with their last win coming versus the Calgary Dinos February 5, 2010.
As could be expected the Bobcats are ranked at the bottom of the conference in both offence and defense, scoring on average only 37.3 points per game, while surrendering just over 80 points. Aimee Johnston is the lone Bobcat to average double digits in points, accounting for nearly a third of the Bobcats offensive production at 11.9 points per game.
