Lethbridge – A day after clinching a post-season berth the Lethbridge Pronghorns had a chance to do something that hadn’t been seen in Lethbridge for 12 years; finish the season above the .500 mark. That’s exactly what they did tonight, defeating the Regina Cougars 96-72.

For the second night in a row, the ‘Horns were led by a balanced attack with five players hitting for double digits. Daryl Cooper led the way with 12 points, while Tyson McIntyre and Alex Fletcher each had 11. Posts Niko Kovac and Dominyc Coward both contributed 10 points.

For the Cougars, Vule Grujic led all scorers with 20 points and Paul Gareau chipped in with 16 points in a losing cause.
With the win the ‘Horns finish the season 11-9 and the Cougars fall to 5-14 with one game to play.

The last time the ‘Horns finished above .500 was during the 1999-2000 when the team went 18-2, which was the best regular season in school history, and lost in the National semi-final to St. FX.

After a lethargic opening quarter, the ‘Horns ramped up the defensive play, forcing the Cougars into 16 opening half turnovers and holding Cougars to a three point second quarter.  At the other end of the floor, the ‘Horns put up 24 points to take a strangle hold of the game with a 44-17 lead at the break.

In addition to the turnover, the Cougars also struggled from the field in the opening half, hitting on 29% of their shots including 1 of 7 from behind the arc.

While the Cougars clawed back in the third quarter and shot the ball better in the second half, the damage was already done and they never truly threatened the ‘Horns large lead.

The ‘Horns will have a week off to prepare for the playoffs , where they will face the Fraser Valley Cascades in a best of three quarter-final in Abbotsford, February 24-26. The Cougars have one game remaining and will travel to Saskatoon to take on Provincial rival Saskatchewan Huskies.
