Box Score LETHBRIDGE – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team has upturned its typical patterns over the past two weekends, finally finding a win on the road against the UBC Okanagan Heat last week and then dropping a game on their home court tonight with a 72-96 loss to the Trinity Western Spartans.
Humber College transfer Mark Perrin was electric for the Spartans, notching 33 points on 12-18 shooting, including seven from beyond the arc, and also pulled down 11 boards. Forward Denny McDonald supported his effort with 17 points of his own and three other Spartans hit for double figures. Fourth-year guard Morgan Duce led the ‘Horns with 20 points and post Derek Waldner logged his third straight double-double and 21
st of his career with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Spartans jumped to an early lead and held an advantage as high as 12 in the first quarter. Though the ‘Horns rode their talented transition game to cut their deficit to two in the second and eight in the fourth they would never gain the lead, ultimately falling victim to an abysmal shooting percentage from three point land and an insufficient one from the field. The ‘Horns went 8-37 for 22 percent from three and shot 33 percent from the floor, compared to the Spartans’ 41 and 50 percent. Notably, the Spartans also outrebounded the ‘Horns 47-38 and shared 23 assists compared with the ‘Horns’ 13.
With the loss, the ‘Horns fall below .500 to 6-7, but will try to rally tomorrow against the Fraser Valley Cascades, their playoff rival from last season that advanced to the next round courtesy of a buzzer beater at the conclusion of the third and deciding game. They will tip off at 8 pm following the women’s game at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre, while the now 5-8 Spartans will face the University of Calgary Dinos at the Jack Simpson Gym. Games will be webcast at canadawest.tv.
