Box Score LETHBRIDGE – Coming off a pair of road losses against Pacific Division teams, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team came out from the huddle hungry for a win, but the Trinity Western University Spartans protested in the second half, ultimately bringing their record to 3-10 with a 63-76 win over the home team. The Horns fall to 5-8 on the season.
Spartan forward, Holly Strom led the victors with a double-double, logging 18 points and 11 boards, while fifth-year Emily Knauff added 16 points before fouling out. The ‘Horns were led by guard Ali Cameron with 20 and third-year post Kim Veldman pulled down 11 rebounds.
The ‘Horns kicked off the game with an 8-0 run, courtesy of an old-fashioned three point play and a three pointer from the corner by Cameron as well as a jumper from fifth-year Stephanie Inman. They held the lead for the entire first half, despite turnover woes, particularly in the closing minutes of second quarter where the ‘Horns only held a one point lead and struggled to keep possession of the ball. The teams headed into the dressing rooms at the break, separated by a one-point differential at 34-33.
Cameron, the ‘Horns’ leading scorer on the night and the season, and fellow Raymond product Katlyn Olsen picked up their third fouls early in the third quarter, leaving the tandem of guards on the bench while the Spartans capitalized on the ‘Horns turnovers, racking up 13 points in the third quarter just off of the ‘Horns’ miscues and outscoring them 11-26 to end the period with a 45-59 advantage. Ultimately, the ‘Horns would outscore the Spartans by a point in the fourth quarter but still dropped the decision, falling to 5-8 on the season.
Though the ‘Horns outperformed the Spartans in several categories, including rebounding and assists, but the most important statistics proved to be the Spartans’ 14 turnovers and 17 steals compared with the ‘Horns’ 23 and 8, respectively. The B.C. team added 34 to the score clock off of turnovers for the game, compared to the ‘Horns’ 14.
The ‘Horns will face the number one team in the country tomorrow night in the Fraser Valley Cascades (11-1) at 6:00 pm in the 1
