WINNIPEG - The Lethbridge Pronghorns got one step closer to playoff position with a 60-48 win over the Manitoba Bisons in Canada West women’s basketball action on Friday, Jan. 25 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).

The victory moves the Pronghorns (7-8) two points back of Alberta for the fourth and final playoff spot in Canada West’s Prairie division. Ali Cameron, Lethbridge’s leading scorer on the season, poured in 22 points in 35 minutes of action. Erin Skippon chipped in with 8 points and 11 rebounds.

For the Bisons (2-14), the loss extends their conference losing streak to 12 games. Stephanie Gill had 14 points for Manitoba, who shot 29.6% from the field in the game.

After an evenly played opening quarter, Lethbridge took control in the second. The Pronghorns opened up the quarter with an 11-0 run and went up 29-14. Cameron paced the way for the visitors in the opening half with 15 points, including a trio of three-point field goals.

“We just didn’t come to play in the first half,” said Bisons co-head coach Michele Hynes. “It took us 20 minutes to get into it but we fought hard in the second half. We got to build on that for tomorrow.”

Manitoba was able to trim the Lethbridge lead to 10 points on a Sheree Carmona-Galdamez layup with 2:45 left in the third, but that would be as close as they would come. The Pronghorns dominated the boards through the game, something Hynes said they hope to improve on tomorrow. The visitors out-rebounded the Bisons by a 48-24 margin and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, contributing to plenty of second chance opportunities.

The Bisons and Pronghorns meet again tomorrow night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. Tip-off is 6 p.m. CST.
