Winnipeg - Kim Veldman led the way with a double double performance as the Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team completed a weekend series sweep of the Manitoba Bisons with a 63-53 win on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).

Veldman scored 25 points and had 17 rebounds as part of a Lethbridge frontcourt that controlled much of the game. Erin Skippon contributed with 16 points for the Pronghorns (8-8), who got back to a .500 record for the first time since Dec. 1.

Brittany Koop had 16 points for the Bisons (2-15). Sheree Carmona-Galdamez finished with 15 points and left in the fourth quarter after being hit with an errant elbow. With the loss, Manitoba sees their conference losing streak hit 13 games.

“We competed for 40 minutes tonight which was nice. I was really pleased with that,” said Bisons co-head coach Michele Hynes. “Lots of things didn’t go our way. We didn’t get calls or hit shots when we needed it. Some nights it doesn’t fall your way.”

Building off a good second half in Friday’s game, Manitoba came out of the gate strong by scoring eight unanswered points. Lethbridge would battle back, scoring a majority of their first half points inside but the Bisons headed into halftime with a 25-23 lead. Carmona-Galdamez had nine points at the half for the home side, who limited Pronghorns’ leading scorer Ali Cameron to a single point (0-4 FG).

Lethbridge continued to find success offensively with their frontcourt in the second half, using Veldman as their focal point on offence. The visitors scored 26 points in the third quarter, opening up a double digit lead. Trailing late, the Bisons began to use a full-court press and generated turnovers. Stephanie Gill’s three pointer with 1:50 left cut the lead to seven but that would be as close as Manitoba would get.

The Bisons resume action on Feb. 1-2 when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Golden Bears. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. MT at the Saville Community Sport Centre. Meanwhile, the Pronghorns return to Lethbridge for a pair of games against the Brandon Bobcats.
