Lethbridge – Coming off their first road sweep of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team (8-8 CW) have played themselves right into the playoff picture with only three weeks remaining in the conference schedule. The ‘Horns will host the Brandon Bobcats (0-16) this weekend.
Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday night’s games is scheduled for 6:00pm and both games will be webcast on
www.canadawest.tv, home for all Canada West webcasts.
The ‘Horns are tied with the Alberta Pandas for the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division with only six games remaining, but the Pandas hold the head-to-head tie breaker after sweeping the ‘Horns in Edmonton earlier this season.
While the ‘Horns are still ranked in the bottom half of the conference offensively, their defensive play has been the team’s strong point of late, holding their opponents below 60 points in their last three games, all wins. The ‘Horns have moved up to eighth in the conference defensively averaging 64.8 points against per game.
At the other end of the floor, Ali Cameron continues to lead the ‘Horns offensively, as she currently sits eighth on the conference scoring list averaging 16.2 points per game. Kim Veldman is coming off her best game in a Pronghorn jersey, setting new career highs last Saturday with 25 points and 17 rebounds.
The winless Bobcats enter the weekend marred in a 61-game conference losing streak. Their last conference win was in February 2010, but after losing by an average of 43 points per game last season, the Bobcats have cut that to less than a 30-point margin of defeat this season.
Ranked last offensively, the Bobcats do not have a player averaging double digits in points and are led by Carrera Lamoureaux and Aimee Johnston who average 7.4 and 6.9 points per game respectively.
With a playoff berth within reach, the ‘Horns schedule gets a whole lot tougher after this weekend, facing the division’s top two teams in their final two weeks. The ‘Horns will travel to Regina next weekend to face the CIS third ranked Cougars, before concluding the conference schedule with a home-and-home series with the eighth ranked Calgary Dinos.
