Horns Return to Conference Play on the Road

Lethbridge – After a solid first half of the season under first-year head coach Erin McAleenan, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team (5-5 CW) kicks off the 2013 portion of the Canada West schedule this weekend on the road, traveling to BC to face a pair of schools.
 
The ‘Horns will face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack before moving on to Kelowna to face the UBC-O Heat. Friday night’s tip-off is scheduled to go at 6:00pm PST and Saturday’s game versus the Heat is set for 5:00pm. Both games will be webcast on www.canadawest.tv .
 
Sitting fourth in the Prairie Division as the schedule nears the mid-point, the ‘Horns earned quality wins during the first semester over the likes of nationally ranked Saskatchewan Huskies and perennial conference title contenders.
 
Offensively, the ‘Horns rank 12th in the conference averaging 60.2 points per night and are among the best teams in the conference from behind the arc. Leading the way for the ‘Horns is guard Ali Cameron, whos 16.9 points per game have her seventh on the conference scoring list. Forwards Kim Veldman and Erin Skippon are both averaging double digits as well with 11.5 and 11.3 respectively.
 
At the other end of the floor, the ‘Horns hold the ninth best defence in Canada West, allowing 65.7 points a game.
 
Friday night, the ‘Horns will get a good test in the 8-3 TRU WolfPack and the conference leading scorer and rebounder. The WolfPack are second in the Pacific Division, riding a four game winning streak and hold the third best offense in the conference, which is led by Diane Schuetze , who leads the conference is scoring, averaging 20.4 ppg. She is also the conference’s leading rebounder, grabbing more than 11 rebounds a night.
 
Also in among the leaders in scoring, Jen Ju is tied with 16.9 points per game but has more total points as the WolfPack has played one more game than the ‘Horns.
 
Saturday night, it will be the ‘Horns first trip to Kelowna to face second-year Canada school UBC-O Heat (4-7). The Heat are ranked ninth offensively (65.4 ppg) but are 15th in the conference defensively, allowing 73.5 points per games.
 
The Heat enter the weekend on the two game losing streak, including a 91-54 loss last weekend to the WolfPack.
 
In the ‘Horns beat the Heat last year in Lethbridge in their first ever match-up, 81-68.
 
The ‘Horns will return home next weekend to host the Trinity Western Spartans and Fraser Valley Cascades.
