'Horns lose on last second basket

Winnipeg - Fifth year forward Steven Wesley scored the game winning basket with 0.6 seconds left in regulation time to give the Winnipeg Wesmen a dramatic 83-81 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday afternoon in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg with the victory remains undefeated in regular season play sitting with a record of 5-0. The Pronghorns with the loss fall to 3-2.

Wesley finished the contest with 13 points. Travis Krahn led the Wesmen with 16 points, including four-three pointers.

Morgan Duce led the Pronghorns with a game high 24 points. Logan Reiter added 17 while Jared Baker finished with a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The two teams started the contest putting a shooting display from the outside. The teams combined for 13-three pointers in the opening half. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 44-42.

After the halftime break the Pronghorns controlled the play in the opening part of the third quarter. Lethbridge opened up a double digit lead at the midway point with 62-48 being the largest. The Wesmen managed to cut the deficit to single digits thanks to a three-pointer by Jordan Clennon to cut the Lethbridge lead to 59-52 after three quarters.

Winnipeg continued to chip away at the Lethbridge lead and at the midway point of the quarter, Winnipeg was finally able to get the lead back in their pocket. The Wesmen held a 81-76 lead late until a three-pointer by Morgan Duce cut the deficit to 81-79. Alex Fletcher tied the game for the Pronghorns with a bucket with 12 seconds left. After a Winnipeg timeout, Wesley scored the winning basket making the final score 83-81.

The two teams will continue their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time).
