Lethbridge – While the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's basketball team put up a valiant effort in the first half, they were no match for the CIS fifth ranked Regina Cougars, falling 81-52 in the first game of the final weekend series of the first semester.

With the win the Cougars move to 7-2, for third place in the Prairie Division. The loss drops the 'Horns to 3-6 on the season.

Katie Polischuck led the Cougars, coming off the bench to score 22 points, while Nicole Clarke chipped in with 16 and also, coming off the bench, Megan Chamberlin registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For the 'Horns, Kim Veldman hit 13 of 15 free throws on her way to leading all scorers with 24 points, while Ali Cameron chipped in with 12 points.

A lack of secondary scoring would spell the end of the Pronghorns for rest of the night. Of the 29 opening half points only four points were scored by someone other than Veldman or Olsen. Conversely the Cougars got huge contributions from their bench throughout the contest. On the night, the Cougars bench outscored the Pronghorns 49-3.

Coming out of the gate, the 'Horns sprinted out to a 8-0 lead and held a 19-14 lead after the first quarter but after the opening 10 minutes, the fifth ranked Cougars took control of the contest and after a 22-10 second quarter, led 36-29 at the half.

Riding the momentum of the second quarter, the Cougars continued to pour it on in the third quarter, building a double digit lead by the midpoint of the third and riding to the lopsided victory.

After shooting over 32% in the opening half, the 'Horns struggled mightily from the floor in the second half, hitting for a dismal 17.6% in the half. The Cougars on the other hand were consistent throughout the night, hitting 15 shots from the floor in each half and finished the night nearly 45% from the field and over 45% from behind the arc after going 7 of 10 from three point land in the second half.

The 'Horns and Cougars will wrap up the weekend series and first semester of conference action tomorrow night, tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm and the game will also be streamed on http://canadawest.tv.
