Lethbridge – Riding a 29-point opening quarter, the Regina Cougars women's basketball completed the weekend sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 79-65 victory Saturday night to close out the first semester of the 2013-2014 Canada West season.
With the win the Cougars improve to 7-2 on the season, while the 'Horns suffer their third consecutive loss and fall to 3-7.
Aided by 11 first quarter points, Nicole Clarke led the Cougars with 24 points, while Kehlsie Crone had 15 and Charlotte Kot and Kaite Polischuk contributed with 12 and 11 points respectively in the win. For the 'Horns, Kim Veldman matched Clarke's 24 to lead her team. Ali Cameron scored 13 points and Mariah Miller scored all 13 of her points in the second half.
The Cougars came out of the gate on fire, shooting a scorching 61.9% in the opening quarter in taking a decisive 29-7 lead. The 'Horns on the other hand were ice cold from the floor, hitting on only three of 15 shots and turning the ball over nine times.
After struggling in the opening quarter, the 'Horns rebounded with a far better effort in the second. They cut the Cougars lead to a more respectable number in the second after outscoring the Cougars 19-10 to close the half down just 13 points.
As is the case in most games, the shooting percentages leveled back to their season averages with the 'Horns heating up in the second hitting on seven of 11 and conversely, the Cougars only hit three shots in the second quarter. At the break, the Cougars finished at 44% from the field and after such a poor first quarter, the 'Horns finished nearly 28%.
Continuing their strong play from the second quarter, the 'Horns put up 23 points in the third, however, the Cougars regained their form from the opening quarter and put up 24 points in the frame to maintain their comfortable lead heading into the final.
Despite having another solid quarter, the 'Horns were unable recover from the early deficit and never threatened the Cougar lead.
Both teams will now be off until the New Year; the 'Horns will return to action January 9
th and 11
th, traveling to face the Mount Royal Cougars and UNBC Timberwolves. The Cougars will also return during the second week of January and host Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan, January 9
th and 10
th.
