LETHBRIDGE – With their eyes fixed on their first playoff slot since the 2009-10 season, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team may have found it tempting to look past the Brandon Bobcats who must reach back three years to cite their most recent conference win. Though their series next weekend against the nationally third-ranked Regina Cougars may carry with it a bit more pressure, the ‘Horns took the opportunity to both give some of their younger players some floor exposure and hone some particular strategies, while still coming away with a 62-42 win.
With the win the ‘Horns move above the 500 mark at 9-8, but remain tied with the Alberta Pandas for the final post-season spot in the Prairie Division, after the Pandas beat the Manitoba Bisons. The Bobcats remain winless on the season and fall to 0-17.
Though nearly every ‘Horn hit the scoresheet in the points category, fifth-year post Erin Skippon led all scorers on the night with 18 and eight rebounds while guard Ali Cameron added 13 points. Carrera Lamoureaux led the Bobcats with nine points.
In a game in which the ‘Horns never trailed, they pushed to a 19-9 lead after one quarter and 35-14 by the halftime buzzer. Over the final two quarters with the ‘Horns rotating through their bench and resting their starters, who all average over 27 minutes a night, the Bobcats won the third quarter and tied the fourth, but the damage was already done. The ‘Horns also maintained control of the glass, outrebounding the Bobcats 41-27.
The ‘Horns and Bobcats will match up again at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre tomorrow night at 6 pm and with a win, the ‘Horns would have their first double digit win season since 1994-95 when they went 10-10 on the season. The game will also webcast on
