Lethbridge – Despite a valiant fourth quarter effort, the Lethbridge Pronghorns couldn’t recover from a poor second quarter and dropped a 76-62 decision the nationally seventh ranked Calgary Dinos in the both teams regular season finale.

The Loss drops the ‘Horns to 10-12 on the season and while the ‘Horns missed the playoffs, there was plenty of positives to take away from this season. The ‘Horns earned four more wins than last season and finished with their first double digit win season since 1994-95.

With the win the Dinos clinch first place in the Prairie Division and finish the season with their best winning percentage since the 1989-90 season, the second of two consecutive undefeated seasons, with a record of 19-3.

Third-year forward Kim Veldman led the all scorers with 19 points, while Erin Skippon, playing in the final game of her career, registered 18 points. For the Dinos, four players hit double digits with Tamara Jarrett leading the way with 17 points. Jessica Franz registered the lone double-double of the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Megan Schaufele and Kristie Sheils chipped in with 13 and 10 respectively.

While the opening quarter was a back and forth affair and the Dinos holding a slim 17-15 lead, the second quarter was all Calgary. While the ‘Horns took a brief lead in the opening moments of the quarter, the Dinos exploded on a 19-2 run to take a stranglehold of the game. When the dust settled after twenty minutes the Dinos held a 42-26 advantage. The ‘Horns turned over the ball 15 times in the first half, leading to 14 Dino points.

Trailing by as many as 20 points and unable to make a dent in the Dinos lead during the third quarter, the ‘Horns opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run and were able to widdle the Dino lead to 8 points with just over five minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get.

The Dinos will host the opening round of the Canada West playoffs next weekend but their opponent has yet to be determined.
