Box Score
Lethbridge – Led by a stellar defensive effort in the first half, the CIS third ranked Alberta Pandas pushed their win streak to 10 games with a 77-55 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Renee Byrne led the way for the Pandas with 16 points and always reliant on a balanced attack, Kendra Asleson was the lone other Panda to hit for double digits, chipping in with 14 points off the bench. The Pandas had 10 players register at least two points.
For the 'Horns Ali Cameron led all scorers 19 points, while the conference's second leading scorer Kim Veldman was held well below her season average of 20.7 points, but had a 12 point, eight rebound night.
With the win the Pandas improve to 11-2 on the season and move a second place tie in the Prairie Division with the Regina Cougars. The loss snaps the 'Horns modest two game winning streak and they fall to 5-8.
The first quarter started slow with both teams missing easy looks and the score stalled for the final two and half minutes of the quarter at 15-7 Pandas.
Coming out of the first break, the Pandas, with the aid of three Pronghorn turnovers, opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to push their lead to double digits for the first time. The Pandas did not let up and moved their lead to 20 points before the quarter was three minutes old.
Sporting the best defence in the country, the Pandas made it difficult on the 'Horns the entire first half, holding the 'Horns to 18 points and forcing the 'Horns deep into the shot clock. Lethbridge only shot 6 for 31 from the field.
Conversely, the Pandas were very efficient at the offensive end of the floor, enroute to 36 first half points on 14 of 37 shooting.
The Pandas continued to pull away in the third quarter, pushing the lead to as many as 27 points. While the 'Horns found themselves in a deep hole, their offense found some life in the third quarter, scoring 16 points in the quarter, after only scoring 17 points in the opening half.
Another solid offensive quarter in the fourth by the 'Horns cut the Pandas lead back to 20 but they were never able to threaten the Pandas large lead.
After shooting a lowly 19% in the opening half, the 'Horns were over 51% shooting in the second half, while the Pandas were consistent throughout the victory, hitting on over 36% from the field in each half.
