Lethbridge – For the second night in a row, the third ranked Alberta Pandas proved to be too much for the Lethbridge Pronghorns to handle and completed the road weekend sweep with a 75-60 win.
Saskia Van Ginhoven led the way for the Pandas with 17 points while Kendra Asleson chipped in with 10 points. For the Pronghorns, post Kim Veldman led all scorers with 20 points, while first-year guard Sara Simovic and Katlyn Olsen each had 13 point nights.
Similar to Friday night's game, a poor shooting first half put the 'Horns behind the eight-ball early and against the top defensive team in Canada West in the Pandas, they were unable to recover.
The 'Horns were only seven for 27 from the floor in the first half and trailed 23-14 after the first quarter and following a 13-4 run by the Pandas to open the second, the 'Horns faced a 19 point deficit at the break, 44-25.
Conversely the Pandas were scorching hot in the opening half, going 20 for 37 in the opening half.
Being down as many as 26 points in the third quarter, the 'Horns mounted a run of their own, highlighted by a buzzer beating half court heave from Kaitlin Olsen that brought the 'Horns back to within 13 heading into the final quarter.
Riding the momentum of Olsen's buzzer-beater, the Horns were able to chip the Pandas lead into single digits at 59-50. Unfortunately for the Horns, that would be as close as they could get before setting for the 15 point loss.
The 'Horns fall to 5-9 on the season, while the Pandas continue to roll, pushing their win streak to 11 games and improve to 12-2.
The task doesn't get any easier for the 'Horns next weekend as they travel to Saskatoon to face the CIS 4
th ranked Saskatchewan Huskies. The Pandas will return home next weekend and host the Calgary Dinos for a pair.
