'Horns swept by ranked Huskies

Saskatoon - Third-year forward Dalyce Emmerson recorded a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 5 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies to an 80-58 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.


Emmerson led all scorers with 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and an 11-of-14 performance from the free throw line. The CIS rebounding and blocked shots leader grabbed six of her 11 boards on the offensive end and added five blocks in the win.


The Huskies improve to 14-2 with the weekend sweep and remain in contention at the top of the Canada West Prairie Division standings. Lethbridge drops to 5-11 on the season.


Both teams came out with a strong defensive focus on Saturday forcing tough shots and turnovers in the early going. Saskatchewan managed to grab a 13-10 lead after the first.


In the second the Huskies grew the lead to 11 points by forcing 13 first half Lethbridge turnovers, while committing just seven to lead 40-29 at halftime.


Saskatchewan maintained a 15-point lead through most of the third period, extending it to 18 by the end of the quarter.


The Huskies continued to increase the lead in the fourth. Lethbridge knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, but Saskatchewan responded with baskets of their own to keep a 20-point cushion.


Fifth-year guard Kiera Lyons added 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Huskies. Kabree Howard dished out a game-high six assists.


Ali Cameron scored a team-high 19 points for the Pronghorns. Kim Veldman, the Canada West's second leading scorer, added 16 points and nine rebounds.


Saskatchewan remains at home to take on the UNBC Timberwolves and Mount Royal Cougars next weekend. The Pronghorns will host the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes.
