Box Score
Lethbridge – Turning 22 Pronghorn turnovers into 29 points, the UBC Thunderbirds opened their Alberta swing trip with a 68-55 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
The win was the Thunderbirds fifth in a row, improving to 12-5 on the season and moving into to a three way tie atop the Pacific Division after the Fraser Valley Cascades lost to the Regina Cougars and the Victoria Vikes beat the Calgary Dinos in Calgary.
The 'Horns suffer their fifth straight loss and fall to 5-12 on the season. They were mathematically eliminated from post-season contention.
Senior Kim Veldman led the Pronghorns with her seventh double-double of the season, scoring a game high 21 points and adding 12 rebounds. She was the lone 'Horn to hit double digits on the night but Ali Cameron and Mariah Miller had nine points apiece.
For the T-Birds, only five players registered points on the night but they got solid performances from four starters with Harleen Sidhu leading the way with 20 points and Cassandra Knievel, Kris Young and Adrienne Parkin each scoring 15 points in the win.
Both teams had solid shooting in the first half with UBC hitting on 51.5% from the field, while the 'Horns were 13 for 26. The difference was the T-Birds ability to get seven more shots off in the half, capitalizing on 12 Pronghorn turnovers.
UBC held leads of 23-14 after one and 40-30 at the half.
With both teams going on runs in the third quarter, when the dust settled the T-Birds lead was still 10. The 'Horns opened the quarter cutting the lead back to a manageable four points, only to see UBC go on a 13-4 run to return the lead to double digits. A jumper from Veldman and a free throw from Sara Simovic cut the lead back to 54-44.
Again the 'Horns wouldn't give up, drawing within five points, but that was as close as they would get.
Both teams cooled off from the field in the second half, with the T-Birds finishing 27 for 63 on the night for 42.9%, while the 'Horns finished the night 40.7% from the floor. In a relatively clean game, the two teams only combined for 21 fouls with the 'Horns going to the line 12 times compared to the Thunderbirds nine attempts from the charity stripe.
The 'Horns will conclude the weekend, tomorrow night hosting the Victoria Vikes, while the Thunderbirds will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos.
Both games will tip-off at 5:00pm and will be streamed live on
