Box Score Lethbridge – Following a solid opening half, the Lethbridge Pronghorns went cold in the third quarter and it cost them in the end, dropping a 79-68 decision to the Regina Cougars.
The win was the Cougars fifth in a row and improves their record to 5-2 on the season, while the 'Horns suffer their second consecutive loss and drop to 3-4.
'Horns fifth-year post Kim Veldman led all scorers on the night with 28 points, while Allexia Barros was the only other Pronghorn to crack double digits with 12. For the Cougars, Kehlsie Crone led the way with 21 points and was a sizzling 5 of 7 from behind the arc. Charlotte Kot and Katie Polischuk each chipped in with 16 points in the win.
Both teams opened with a sloppy opening quarter with multiple errant passes but Cougars clawed to a nine point lead at the first break.
Turnovers continued to plague Regina in the second quarter, allowing the Pronghorns back into the game as the Horns took a 35-34 lead heading into the break.
The 'Horns turned 14 Regina first half turnovers into 13 points with senior post Kim Veldman holding the hot hand in the opening 20 minutes. Veldman poured in 17 first half points on 6 of 10 shooting, including three – three pointers in the opening quarter.
In the opening half, the 'Horns were 36.1% from the field, while the Cougars were a hair better at 36.4%. The Cougars used their length to their advantage, controlling the glass and out rebounding the 'Horns 23 to 11.
Coming out of the break, the 'Horns appeared to come out flat and the Cougars jumped all over them, turning the one-point deficit into a 10 point lead after three.
Despite the poor third, the 'Horns wouldn't go away quietly in the final period, cutting the Cougar lead to six on multiple occasions but could not get over the hump.
Down 72-66 with just over three minutes to play, the 'Horns went four straight possessions without scoring and could not get a stop at the other end and when the dust settled the Cougars were back securely in control.
On the night, the 'Horns were 37% from the field. Meanwhile, after shooting a sizzling 54.2% in the second half, the Cougars finished the night with a solid shooting performance, hitting on 43.9% from the floor.
The Cougars also finished the night with a 39 to 24 rebounding advantage.
