Box Score Lethbridge - Looking to avenge an 11-point loss the previous night to the visiting Regina Cougars, the Lethbridge Pronghorns were once again derailed by a cold-shooting quarter and fell to the Cougars 72-58.
Â
With their sixth win in a row, the Cougars move to 6-2 on the season, while the 'Horns have now lost three straight and drop to 3-5 on the year.
Fifth-year standout Kim Veldman started off hot, scoring nine points to lead the 'Horns on an 11-2 run to open the game. A back-and-forth quarter saw Regina come storming back with a run of its own to gain the advantage, 15-13, but the 'Horns closed the quarter strong to grab a 22-17 lead at the 1
st break.
Â
Veldman led all scorers with 16 points in the 1
st quarter, while second-year forward Mariah Miller was the only other Pronghorn to net a basket, adding six points for the home side.
Â
Second-year guard Caitlin Zacharias paced the Cougar attack with six points after hitting a couple of three-pointers, while fourth-year guard Kehlsie Crone added five points.
Â
Both offenses sputtered in the second quarter as the 'Horns and Cougars each went long stretches without a basket. After Veldman sunk a pair of free throws just 14 seconds into the quarter, the game went a full three-and-a-half minutes without a basket until Crone sunk a three-pointer to finally give the Cougars some life.
Â
The 'Horns were unable to score a basket in the quarter, settling for another pair of free throws from Veldman to close the quarter and knot the game 26-26 at the end of the first half. Veldman finished the half with 20 points on 7-13 from the field. Crone led the Cougars with eight points going into the break.
Â
Looking for someone to pitch in on the offensive end and complement Veldman, the 'Horns got some help from third-year guard Allexia Barros, who found her touch, adding seven points with a pair of jumpers and a three-pointer. Â
Â
But the 'Horns didn't have an answer for the long-range shooting of Kehlsie Crone, who hit another pair of threes as the Cougars began to pull away – taking a 47-35 lead into the 3
rd quarter break. Six-foot forward Charlotte Kot added eight points in the quarter for the Cougars.
Â
The double-digit lead would stand up for the Cougars as they continued to have the hot-hand from behind the arc and prevented the 'Horns from clawing their way back into the game. Veldman, who carried the 'Horns attack all night, tried to will the home team to victory as she rattled off nine straight points to trim the Cougar lead to seven midway through the quarter.
Â
But that was as close as the 'Horns would get as back-to-back three-pointers from Katie Polischuk and Zacharias restored the Cougar lead to 10 and the visitors cruised to 72-58 victory to earn the weekend sweep.
