Winnipeg - The University of Manitoba Bisons fought to finally break their eight-game losing streak, but fell to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 66-43 in women's basketball on Friday, Nov. 28 at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The win brings the Pronghorns to 4-5, while the Bisons drop to 0-9.

"We were a little bit sloppy," said Manitoba head coach Michele Hynes. "Thirty turnovers definitely doesn't help our cause."

Lethbridge had 22 turnovers in the game, but maintained a 41.9 overall scoring percentage. Manitoba only made 30.4 per cent.

The Pronghorn's Allexia Barros led the scoring with 26 total points, while Manitoba's Robyn Eyer led the home team with 10.

The Bisons had a rough start, committing four team fouls and trailing 11-22 at the end of the first quarter.

The Pronghorns shut down the Bisons' offense in the second quarter, but Manitoba only added two points to finish the half down 13-34.

Manitoba forward Montana Kinzel gave the Bisons a chance at redemption in the third. She stole the ball and then drew a foul from Lethbridge guard Sara Simovic. Kinzel scored on both free throw attempts, but the Bisons couldn't keep up momentum. Despite scoring 14 points in the quarter, the Bisons ended the third down 27-52.

The Bisons started the fourth strong and kept the Pronghorns from scoring for the first three minutes of the quarter, but Lethbridge soon took back control of the court. The Pronghorns fought back, drawing enough fouls to shoot in bonus by the end of the quarter. Manitoba's Samantha Pike fouled out with just over a minute left in the game. The Pronghorns took possession in the last few seconds, winning the game 66-43.

"We need to learn to carry out a game plan for 40 minutes," Hynes said. "Over the break, we'll get rested and get healthy and get our young players learning how to win and compete as a team."

The teams play their last game of 2014 on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. CST at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
