Box Score Lethbridge – An aggressive defense and timely outside shooting proved to be too much for the Lethbridge Pronghorns this weekend as the 'Horns suffered their second consecutive loss versus the undefeated Winnipeg Wesmen 69-49 at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre in Lethbridge Saturday night.
The Pronghorns fall to 2-2 with the loss, while the Wesmen move to 4-0 on the season.
Looking to avoid the sluggish start that led to their demise last night, the Pronghorns got things started with a Mariah Miller three-pointer but then went stone-cold, failing to register much else offensively for the remainder of the quarter. The Wesmen took advantage of a rash of Pronghorn turnovers and began to pull away with less than three minutes to play in the opening frame. Wesmen guard Megan Noonan drained a three and then Noonan and teammate Samantha Donald hit on consecutive jumpers to take a 19-8 lead into the first break.
The second quarter picked up where the first left off. Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Pronghorns throughout the opening half as they turned the ball over 15 times and shot just 29.2% from the field.
Meanwhile, Noonan and Donald continued to have the hot hand, scoring 12 and nine points respectively, while Stephanie Kleysen did her damage at the free-throw line to chip in another dozen points of her own and help extend the Wesmen lead to 36-23 at the half.
The 'Horns were led by Mariah Miller's 10 points on four-of-six shooting, including two-for-two from behind the arc. Fifth-year standout Kim Veldman was held to just four points at the half.
The Pronghorns looked to get Veldman into the game early in the third quarter as she got to the post and nailed a jumper to open the second half scoring. But the Wesmen would continue to pull away, going on an 18-4 run midway through the quarter to push their lead to 25. This time it was Kleysen with the outside shooting touch, hitting a pair of threes on her way to a 12-point quarter.
The Wesmen took advantage of the turnover-prone 'Horns once again in the third quarter, forcing another eight steals and turning several into easy buckets. Winnipeg dominated the glass on the offensive end, getting a dozen second-chance points by the end of the third, which finished 58-33 in favour of the Wesmen.
Third-year 'Horns guard Alexxia Barros managed to find her groove in the fourth quarter, hitting four jumpers to finish with eight points. However, the Wesmen had an answer for every Pronghorn score, extending their lead to as many as 29 before cruising to a 20-point victory.
Kleysen led all scorers with 24 points on 7-12 shooting, while pulling down 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Noonan added 17 while Donald chipped in with 11.
The 'Horns were led by Mariah Miller's 14 points and eight rebounds, while Veldman added 13 points in the loss.
Next up for the Pronghorns is a trip to Langley to face the Trinity Western Spartans. The Wesmen continue their road-trip with a visit to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies.
