Lethbridge – Playing in their final home game of the Canada West season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's basketball team looked to play spoiler in the Calgary Dinos quest to lock down a playoff spot, but a poor third quarter for the 'Horns allowed the Dinos to walk away with the 67-57 win.
Fourth-year post Kim Veldman led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed seven boards, while Ali Cameron was the lone other Pronghorn to hit double digits, chipping in with 14 points. Playing in her final home game as a Pronghorn, Katlyn Olsen had six points, five rebounds, and five assists in the loss.
For the Dinos a trio led the way with Ashley Hirons scoring a team high 16 points. Kristie Sheils poured in 15 points and fifth-year guard Tamara Jarrett rounded out the three double-digit point performances with 12 of her own.
With the win, the Dinos improve to 12-9 and move one game closer to locking down the fourth and final playoff spot in the Prairie Division. The Dinos entered the final two-game series tied with the Winnipeg Wesmen for fourth in the Division but hold the tie breaker after sweeping the Wesmen earlier this season. With one game remaining in their season, a win in the back half of the home-and-home series with the 'Horns will see the Dinos clinch that final spot.
The loss drops the 'Horns to 6-15 and they will conclude their 2013-14 season tomorrow night in Calgary.
While the Dinos never trailed after the 'Horns opening basket, the game was close throughout the entire game. After a back and forth opening 10 minutes, the Dinos held a 20-18 lead and they were able to stretch the lead to five, 36-31 at the half.
Despite holding the Dinos to only 11 third quarter points, the 'Horns were unable to capitalize and a poor shooting quarter for 'Horns left them with only six points. The Dino lead grew to 10 at the end of three quarters. Each team scored 20 points in the final quarter, but the 'Horns had cut the lead to four early in the fourth, only to see the Dinos stretch back to 10 with an 8-2 run.
A huge contributing factor in the Dinos win was their work on the glass, out rebounding the 'Horns 44-31, including 17 on the offensive end, and created many second looks for the visitors.
On the night, the Dinos finished 26 for 72 from the field, while the 'Horns were 21 for 62 for 33.9% from the floor.
The back half of the home-and-home series will go tomorrow night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium in Calgary. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm and the game will be streamed live on
