'Horns have to settle for a split after loss to Bobcats

BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats women's basketball team ended their 2013-14 home schedule on  a high-note with a 70-59 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night, earning the weekend split.
 
The Bobcats were slow off the start, allowing Lethbridge to lead until the last two minutes of the second quarter, when Brandon tied it on back-to-back lay-ups by rookies Amy Williams and Keegan Robinson. The Bobcats did not look back from there, maintaining the lead until the final buzzer.
 
The 'Cats were led by Cassie Cooke's game-high 20 points, who finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds to go along with six assists and five steals. Kaela Cranston added 15 points in the win, while Stephanie Haynes added 11 points. Playing in her final home game, fifth-year Jaynell Gillett was solid, finishing with seven points and nine rebounds.

For the 'Horns, post Kim Veldman led the way again tonight with another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while first-year forward Mariah Miller also recorded a double-double with a 10 point, 11 rebound night. Ali Cameron chipped in with 13 points in the loss.
 
The win improves Brandon's record to 6-14, while Lethbridge has the same record.
 
Up next for Brandon is a weekend road-trip to Regina to close out the 2013-14 Canada West regular season, while the Pronghorns will play a home-and-home series against the Calgary Dinos, begining in Lethbridge Wednesday night at 6:00pm.
