Box Score Lethbridge - The third-ranked nationally Saskatchewan Huskies picked up their 10
th straight victory Friday night with a convincing 83-53 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre.
The Pronghorns headed into tonight's game mired in a seven-game losing streak, but battled back-and-forth with the division leading Huskies early on as Saskatchewan led just 25-21 after one quarter.
A premier match-up pitted reigning Canada West MVP and defensive player of the year Dalyce Emmerson against Pronghorn fifth-year standout Kim Veldman, the conference's top scorer.Â
The 6'3" Emmerson won the battle early, forcing Veldman to play from the perimeter and take long-range jumpers instead of playing to her strength inside.Â
Veldman got off to a rough start, shooting 0-7 before a finally hitting a long field goal midway through the second quarter to get on the board.
The disciplined 'Horns did not register a foul in the game until two minutes into the second quarter when sophomore forward Mariah Miller sent the Huskies Laura Dally to the line. Allexia Barros, coming off a 30-point effort last Saturday versus Victoria, picked up where she left off to lead the 'Horns with 13 points in the first half.
Strong play from the Saskatchewan bench, led by third-year guard Desarae Hogberg, got the better of the 'Horns late in the half and extended the Huskies' lead to 11 after two quarters.Â
Veldman was limited to just four points in the half on 1-12 shooting, but held her own on the defensive end, pulling down five rebounds while keeping Emmerson in check with just six points at the half. Dally and Hogberg paced the Huskies' attack with 9 points apiece after two quarters.
The third quarter began with both Emmerson and Veldman picking up the pace on the offensive end, trading baskets as neither team could sustain a run. Barros sat out the second half after taking a hit to the head, but the 'Horns got a boost from Miller who pitched in with a strong offensive effort in the second half. An even-played third quarter was won by Saskatchewan 17-15 as the Huskies pushed their lead to 13 over the 'Horns.
With Kim Veldman on the bench early in the fourth quarter, Emmerson dominated the Pronghorns down low, leading the Huskies on a 16-0 run to take a 26-point lead and put the game away.
Emmerson finished with 21 points on 9-13 shooting, while pulling down eight rebounds in the win. Dally and Hogberg added 13 points each.
The Pronghorns were led offensively by Barros and her 13-point first half performance, while Veldman was held to her second lowest point total of the season, scoring 12 points on 4-19 shooting. Miller chipped in with a solid 10 point, nine rebound effort.
