Box Score Lethbridge – In the final home game of the Canada West season, the Lethbridge Pronghorns were no match for the nation's third-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies, falling 88-41 in Canada West women's basketball action.
The win for the Huskies is their 11
th straight and pushes their record to 15-3. The 'Horns suffer their ninth straight loss and fall to 4-14.
The rematch of Friday night's contest got off to a sluggish start with neither team able to find their offensive rhythm and stalled at a 2-0 Huskie lead for nearly four minutes. A pair of Kim Veldman free throws broke the goose egg for the Pronghorns and tied the game at two.
For the rest of the quarter, the 'Horns continued to struggle in their offensive sets, only hitting one shot from the floor, while the Huskies overcame some early offensive struggles to put up 22 points and lead the 'Horns by 13 points at the first break.
Not much changed in the second for the home side, as they continued to struggle offensively versus the top defensive team in the conference and the Huskies built upon their early lead.
Another 22-point quarter, thanks to 8 for 16 from the floor, the Huskies led 44-20 at the break. While the 'Horns hit five shots from the floor in the second quarter, their percentage at half was a frigid 22%. The Huskies on the other hand were clipping along at 44% and hit five deep balls in the half.
Veldman led the way for the 'Horns with 8 points, six of which came from the charity stripe. Laura Dally had an exceptional first half for the Huskies with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting and Megan Lindquist provided a spark off the bench, hitting of four of her five shots and counted for 11 points.
The Huskies onslaught continued in the second half, adding to their lead in both the third and fourth quarters, scoring 24 and 20 points respectively, while holding the Pronghorns offense in check.
Playing in her final home game as a Pronghorn, post Kim Veldman led the 'Horns with 16 points and fell one rebound shy of her 27
th career double-double. Veldman will go down as one of the best players to ever go through the program and sits as the school's all-time leading rebounder and second leading scorer, heading into her final two games next weekend on the road.
Mariah Miller was the lone other Pronghorn to hit double digits and chipped in with 10.
For the Huskies, Laura Dally led all scorers with 20 points and completed the double-double adding 10 rebounds. Lindquist finished the night with 18 points on an efficient 7 of 10 shooting night.
The 'Horns will conclude their season next weekend in Edmonton versus the Alberta Pandas and the Huskies finish the conference schedule next weekend as well with top spot in the Pioneer Division in sight with a match-up at home versus the Calgary Dinos.
